House System
Here at Dunclug, on enrolment all pupils are allocated a house, the first letter of which is noted on their school tie. The houses are named after streets and townlands that form part of our community, and are as follows:
Ballyloughan (blue)
Harberton (yellow)
Rathmore (red)
Pinegrove (green)
The house system exists to engender a sense of belonging whilst building community spirit, to promote competition, and to give pupils a sense of achievement both inside and outside the classroom. Belonging to a house gives pupils the opportunity to develop valuable leadership skills and above all, create a stronger pupil voice.
Elections are held in early September and elected House Captains and Vice-Captains from each year group sit on either Junior School Council, Middle School Council or Senior School Council. Here they debate, make suggestions, and give opinions on aspects of their learning, improving the school community and ensuring the voice of the pupil body is represented.
Throughout the year, various house competition take place including activities such as netball, rugby, poetry, school production, art, Photoshop project, French cartoons, castle project………and the list goes on, with something for everyone and opportunity for all.
At the end of the year, house points are totalled up and the house shield awarded to the victorious house – until the next year, when competition starts all over again!
