MFL Department
We seek to provide an environment to stimulate, enthuse and encourage pupils and to provide thought-provoking and challenging materials. We have high expectations of our pupils and aim that each will achieve their full potential.
We have three goals for our pupils:
Modern Languages are part of the minimum requirement for every pupil at Key Stage 3.
All pupils learn Spanish in KS 3 and cover topics such as Self, Family and Friends, Routine and School Life, Future Plans and Careers. In Year 9 all pupils follow the OLA Entry 2 CEA specification and aim to achieve OLA Entry 2 certification.
In Year 10 all pupils follow the OLA Entry 3 CEA specification and aim to achieve OLA Entry 3 certification. Some classes study European Studies which consists of a language element, culture plus current affairs centred around Europe.
GCSE French
The study of a foreign language , as well as enriching cultural and global awareness , would be most useful to pupils interested in the following areas : Tourism, Hostelry, Travel and European Business. However studying a foreign language also develops communication and listening skills as well as the ability to summarise and scan articles for information. These skills would be useful in a wide variety of careers.
French is offered as an optional GCSE at KS4. From Sept 2016 we are following the CEA GCSE French specification.
In Year 11 pupils begin to study CEA OLA Entry 2 Spanish and have opportunity to gain a certificate in the language in Year 12.
At KS5 A Level French can be offered in collaboration with other schools.
