Steady GCSE Progress maintained at Dunclug College

In the second year of a transition which has seen a large number of newly enrolled pupils entering GCSE study, Dunclug College has maintained steady progress.  A pleasing 72% of all grades were in the A – C range.  61% of students achieved a minimum of 5 GCSE grades including English/Maths, with 78% reaching a minimum of 4 top grades. There was an increased number of A grades in both English and Maths, as well as in the Applied subjects, with 33% of all students obtaining at least one A grade.  For those of more modest ability, it was very encouraging to note that  96% of all students gained a minimum of 5 subjects in the A – E range, which opens up many opportunities for pathways in apprenticeships and vocational Level 3 courses.  The range of qualifications achieved, and ensuing opportunity, is testament to the sustained effort of pupils, parents and staff.  Despite the rushed reforms to GCSE courses and/or to performance measurements, the teachers have shown great tenacity in preparing our pupils for success.

Superb individual performances came from many students, including the following, who each achieved a combination of A* A & B grades:   Laura Reid (11 grades), Katie McFetridge (10 grades), Chloe Hayes, Chelsea Morrow (9 grades), Courtney Davis, Kirsten Collins, David Johnston, Anna Knox, Eve McAleese, Cain McCullough, Shannon Morrow, Adam Pidgeon,  Amy Smyth, (8 grades),  Jack Alexander, Carolyn Aiken,  Rebecca Ellis, Aaron Houston, Louise Kernohan, Josh Speedy, Noel Crawford, (7 grades), David Morrow (6 grades). There are children too numerous to mention who each achieved a personal best, and  the teaching staff and Governors take pleasure in wishing them all every success in the future.

The following subject areas each achieved 100% in the A – C range: Double Award Agriculture, DA Prince’s Trust, Occupational Construction, Occupational Design & Creativity, Performing Arts and BTEC Sport -  followed by: Double Award Science 98%,  ICT 97%,  English Literature 91%, Child Development 89%, Construction 86%, Technology & Design 81%, Art 80%, Hospitality 80% Engineering 78%, RE 77%, Media Studies 75%, Home Economics 73%,  English 69%  Geography, 64%  French, 63% Single Award Science 63%,
